ENACT Network

Overview

The ENACT Network is a self-service platform that allows researchers to query Electronic Health Record (EHR) data from WashU and participating sites. The primary purpose of this stated on the ENACT webpage is feasibility for clinical studies by determining the number of patients with specific characteristics at these sites. For example, a WashU researcher can build a query to determine how many patients were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2019 and 2020 at WashU and other collaborating sites such as the University of Pittsburgh and UC San Diego. Using ENACT for this purpose is free to all WashU researchers and can be accessed with an active WashU key.

A secondary purpose is to identify EHR data that can be used directly for analysis. This secondary purpose is not self-service as researchers can find the number of patients, but cannot extract raw data related to queries created on their own. For example, a user can create a query to determine how many people (total number) were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the years 2019 and 2020, but they cannot extract the hemoglobin A1c values for these patients. In order to extract raw data associated with queries, the researcher must work with Platform Engineering. There is a fee associated with these processes*

The ENACT Network is approved by the IRB at each member institution and compliant with relevant regulations such as HIPAA. Researchers can use the network to query patient data from participating sites, which includes demographics, diagnoses, lab results, and medications prescribed.

ENACT was developed collaboratively by members of NCATS’ Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) consortium, with funding from the NIH National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences.

ICS Role

  1. Data Warehousing contributes data to the ENACT network to be queried by users.
  2. Platform Engineering grants access to WashU users.
  3. Accessing raw data associated with queries at a $150 per hour fee*

*WashU does not support the ENACT Network infrastructure so if a user requests raw data, we will need to work with MU to access the patient IDs associated with the query. As of 6/23/2025, we have not completed this process so are unsure of the timeframe to complete. Other institutions that host the infrastructure can access raw data directly without working with MU.
