MDClone
Overview
MDClone is a web application that provides access to synthetic data derived from real clinical data at medical centers. As such, it provides a source of fully anonymized data for researchers to test hypotheses preparatory to research, programming code, etc., using data that replicates its real-world statistical properties but without the need for IRB or HIPAA approval.
WashU has a single instance of MDClone (see below) that allows users to build and run queries on an MDClone Data Lake populated by data from Epic (August 2018 implementation) and other legacy Electronic Medical Record systems (EMRs) from the BJC Wash U Network of facilities. Visits from the legacy databases goes back as far as 1997.

MDClone is a secure, self-service platform for building queries and downloading computationally derived (“synthetic”) data from the institute’s research data core (RDC). Since the data do not contain protected health information (PHI), their use is not classified as human subject research. Our instance of MDClone is designed to meet the specific clinical and translational research needs of researchers at the WashU School of Medicine.
