TriNetX
Overview
TriNetX is a global health research network that enables healthcare organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and researchers to collaborate and share real-world clinical data. The platform is designed to facilitate the discovery and development of new therapies, enable more efficient clinical trials, improve patient outcomes, and support research by providing access to a large, anonymized dataset of patient records.
The TriNetX research network is a federated system. This means that data is not centrally stored or processed. Instead, it remains within the individual healthcare organizations that are part of the network. TriNetX acts as a centralized platform that provides tools and infrastructure for researchers to access and analyze data from these distributed sources, ensuring data privacy and security while facilitating collaboration and research.
TriNetX hosts a third party web-based application at https://live.trinetx.com. This 3rd party application makes requests to a proxy "agent", a specialized application also created by TriNetX, but resides behind WashU's internal network. The agent processes these requests and returns back relevant EHR count statistics to the TriNetX web application. The agent has access to a extracted, transformed, and formatted EHR dataset from WashU's OMOP database that's updated on a monthly basis.
The TriNetX web application has no access to PHI, only deidentified OMOP patients IDs. Additionally, the export of patient IDs is also restricted. It can only be requested when an investigator has a valid IRB and approved project request.

Cost
There is no cost to query TriNetX for general data exploration and counts. For a request for data extraction, users will need to submit a intake request via REDCap. The form will require 2 pieces of required information:
- cost center #
- IRB identifier
